Our Services

When Tony Adams first acknowledged his own problems with alcohol in 1996, he was put in touch with James West, who later became the Clinical Director at Sporting Chance Clinic in 2000. Since then the programme has developed and expanded gradually.  Recognising the need for treatment of the body, mind and spirit we successfully provide a service that is holistic in its approach to recovery. Our experience also means we understand the specific problems that high-level, high-profile sport can bring.

Here at Sporting Chance Clinic those in need of help can begin looking at their problems, both personal and professional, under the expert guidance of our experienced team  in a non-judgemental atmosphere of peace, understanding and strict anonymity.

Assessment

Following an initial telephone or email contact, clients are invited to attend a clinical assessment either at Forest Mere or in London. The assessment lasts around ninety minutes and looks at a client’s history, current situation and potential ways in which we can support them to move forward.  This may involve residential treatment, one to one counselling with Sporting Chance Clinic or a referral to an affiliated service. When necessary, clients may require further assessment by our consultant psychiatrist. Our aim as always is to tailor the care to the individual need of the client.

Residential Treatment

We offer a 26 day residential programme in a caring and supportive environment where our clients can begin the journey of recovery. Clients live in a shared house and commit to a 7 day per week compulsory programme, designed to treat their body, mind and spirit. As well as individual one to one counselling and group therapy our clients experience a range of complimentary therapies including: Shiatsu massage, Equine Assisted Therapy and Asyuna meditation.

Physical needs are addressed with a full medical examination on arrival, a carefully worked out nutritional programme, full fitness test and individual fitness programmes. Additionally we have football training and physiotherapy on a weekly basis and have full use of gym, swimming and spa facilities. Walking, mountain biking, tennis and ping-pong are also on offer.

Our programme for recovery from addictions is based on the 12-step philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous and attendance at 12 step meetings is an integral part of treatment. While we make every effort to support and encourage our clients we are also well aware that the ultimate responsibility rests with them. Self reflection, written work and clients’ support for one another are we believe as important as the work we do.

The mental aspect focuses on self-defeating behaviour patterns and the treatment plan is designed to help the individual understand how these patterns have contributed to a downward spiral affecting every aspect of their lives, from their relationships right through to their performance in the sporting arena.

Our engagement with and support for our clients does not end when they leave our clinic. Each client is offered an aftercare programme on their return home. This may involve ongoing one to one counselling locally or at Sporting Chance Clinic. Additionally our team are always available for telephone support or to arrange refresher visits to the clinic.

One to one counselling

Either as part of a client’s aftercare, or as an alternative to residential treatment, we offer a one to one counselling service, at the clinic or in our rooms in Central London. Where this is geographically impossible we endeavour, through the network of contacts that we have built up throughout the country, to find the right support locally and conveniently.
