'PHYSIO FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL'
Welcome to Sporting Chance
Inspired by his own emotional and mental health issues, Sporting Chance is the brainchild of former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams, MBE.
Having played top flight professional football for over 15 years, Tony experienced the unique environment of elite level sport first-hand, the thoughts and feelings that can stem from living and competing in such an environment, and the impact of those thoughts of feelings if not addressed safely. Tony’s attempts to cope with his emotions led to a progressive increase in his drinking and in 1996, the now well-documented public acknowledgement of his alcoholism. By accessing discreet, professional talking therapy, Tony was able confront his problems and better understand his patterns of behaviour and the emotions that lay behind them.
A few years down the line, still abstinent from alcohol and developing a new sense of emotional literacy, Tony reflected on the increasing volume of calls he was taking from fellow athletes who, for a variety of different reasons, were struggling with their own emotional and mental health. He began to see the need for a safe, dedicated service to provide both male and female athletes with tailored support to process their thoughts and feelings, receive clinical help for mental health conditions or sport-focused rehabilitation for gambling, alcohol or drug addiction.
In the year 2000 Sporting Chance was born and has since developed into a leading treatment and education provider for professional and former professional sportspeople.
An Integrated Approach
About Our Services
Sporting Chance provides support to current and retired athletes in three areas:
Every athlete that contacts us is struggling in some way with how they are feeling. Some can attribute their feelings to the situation they are in or a certain life event, many simply tell us that they don’t feel right, they haven’t for some time and they don’t really know why. Our nationwide counselling network enables our clients to access confidential, professional support to work through issues which not only impact on their quality of life but in many cases, their ability to perform to their best.
Some of those individuals are experiencing problems with gambling, alcohol or other drugs. In some instances, depending on the extent of the problem, we would recommend clients attend our residential clinic where they can get the help they need in a purpose built environment away from their daily lives. Our residential programmes vary in length, again, depending on how far the problem has progressed.
We also deliver education and training directly to sporting organisations across the UK. In our seminars we talk to athletes about the different issues we help our clients with on a daily basis and things they can consider to minimise the impact of emotional and mental health problems including, but not limited to, accessing the services mentioned above. We have developed an extensive range of sessions on issues such as emotional wellbeing and mental health, gambling, substance use and player lifestyle.
We are proud that our services have become an integral part of the welfare programme for our stakeholders including the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the Football Association (FA), the Premier League, League Football Education (LFE), the Rugby Football League (RFL), the Professional Darts Players Association (PDPA), the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), the Professional Jockeys’ Association (PJA), the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and Sport Northern Ireland (SNI).
We do not receive any funding directly from the gambling industry.
If you are a member of any of the above organisations or have played the sports they are associated with at a professional level, you may be able to access our services, click here for more details.
