Departmental Assistant (Education, Communication and Athlete Engagement)

Place of work – Sporting Chance, York Office

40 hour week,  Monday to Friday

Role and responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to work for the world’s longest established provider of mental health services working exclusively with professional sport. This is a role for an adaptable, independent thinker who can work proactively and creatively as part of a growing and dynamic team to serve our primary purpose; increasing the number of professional athletes who are aware of Sporting Chance and how our services can help them.

The successful applicant will be interested in and enthusiastic about mental health, sport and professional sportspeople. We want someone who can develop and help to deliver engaging education sessions for athletes, coaches and wider support staff around emotional wellbeing and mental health in sport. We also want someone who can develop our connection with athletes away from orthodox education sessions, from 17 year old footballers in an academy environment to ATP Tour tennis players on the other side of the world. While social media and digital platforms will play a part in this, there is no fixed blueprint in terms of how this area of our work will develop and the successful candidate will play a significant role in shaping this.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building relationships with stakeholders and individuals to generate authentic and meaningful interaction with the professional athletes we serve on the subject of emotional wellbeing and mental health

  • Collating research relating to emotional wellbeing and mental health in a sporting context and working with individuals, organisations and institutions to generate further research in this area.

  • Utilising statistics and trends from our client group to inform how we communicate with athletes

  • Managing the day to day running of our social media accounts

  • Developing other communication streams with the help of external partners and supplying these with high quality, original content

  • Developing educational content to a wide range of athletes and support staff on emotional wellbeing and mental health issues and the services that Sporting Chance provides

  • Participating in the delivery of education sessions to different groups (online and face to face)

  • Managing the administration of the education diary

  • Working with our clinical team / therapist network on collaborative education or athlete engagement projects

  • Supporting the Education, Communication and Athlete Engagement Department in its duties where required.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • High level of IT literacy including knowledge of and ability to evidence competency on social media, MS Office (incl. PowerPoint)

  • Reading and writing to a high standard

  • Excellent communication manner

  • Ability to work equally well independently and collaboratively

  • Good time management

  • Office based experience

  • Ability to demonstrate independent thinking, creativity and effectively present ideas

  • Understanding and interest in the field of mental health and treatment of mental health problems

  • Interest in and knowledge of the professional sporting landscape.
